Youth Beds
We have made a few youth beds over the years, working closely with our customers to create a product that is truly enjoyed. All of the beds we make are done through our “bring your own project” process. We especially enjoy working with customers that are looking for a product that best symbolizes our mission at Birds in the Wood. We love making things that are both “fun” and “functional”. We think you will see that the youth beds here are representative of those characteristics. Included here are just a few photos to give a view to our collaborative efforts. Maybe we can help you develop an idea of your own.
In the photos here, you see (3) beds that each have their own story.
THE FERRARI “7”
This one is our most recently delivered bed. Our customer wanted a bed for a young pre-school boy and wanted it to have a race car look. There were several that could be found while shopping online but few if any offered the bed in a full size. Nearly all that could be found were twin beds. After agreeing to move forward with a design, we came up with the Ferrari. We were able to acquire some Ferrari decals that we integrated into the design. We also integrated the customer’s request for the number “7”. We built a hinged storage compartment into the headboard area. The rear air foil serves as a shelf. The wheels are actually the bed posts and yet take on a realistic look with the raised white letters on the tires and real hubcaps. The family of the young race car enthusiast has since moved from Cincinnati to Philadelphia and the Ferrari made the move.
THE SWEET PEA BUNK BED
Our customer wanted sturdy, safe and vibrant bunk beds for the two girls in the photo. Our customer was looking for someone to build a design for the bed that was found on and acquired from the Ana White website. One very significant requirement was introduced. The bed had to be rock solid and yet able to be disassembled and reassembled. The individual parts had to be small enough to make a tight turn in the home where the only access to the bedrooms were stairs leading to the second floor. Because the family intended to move inside of two years, the ability to assemble and disassemble was a must. As can be seen in the photo, the beds resemble a two-story house, complete with windows, shutters, a pergola and a roof. Not seen in the photo are the flower boxes below the ground floor windows, the bookshelves that are integrated into the stairs that rise to the upper bunk, and the shelves on the inside back wall of each bunk. After much head scratching and a few good erasers, we came up with a design that worked. The girls first took occupancy at ages 2 and 3 years. The entire bed is joined together with bolts and wing nuts. The photo here shows the bed several years later after a move to a new home was completed. They are now going into middle school and want rooms of their own. The Sweet Pea parts have come back to our shop and will be refurbished before moving on to a new owner.
THE MUSTANG
The Mustang was the first bed we ever built. It lasted more than 15 years before the decision was taken to finally scrap the bed. The mother who brought this concept to us wanted to know if we could make a bed that would resemble a classic Mustang. Her son loved Mustangs. She also wanted integrated storage and nightlights. We created the sideboards of the bed in a way that we felt best modeled the lines of the classic. We also added pinstriping and a pony decal to the sideboards to emphasize this design element. Not seen in the photo are two taillights and two headlights that work to fulfill the desire for a nightlight. The bed is wired and plugs into a wall outlet to achieve the effect, with the wiring being installed in a way that it is not readily accessible. The trunk of the Mustang does double duty as a headboard and a hinged lidded storage bin. The white letters on the tires are hand painted and the tires sport real hubcaps. A real license plate is attached to the front and rear bumpers on this bed. The boy who received this bed is now in his third year at university with an eye toward med school.
