A retired minister from our church community offers an event once each year for senior church members. Fondly called the Adult Vacation Bible School (aka Adult VBS), the event centers around a specific biblical topic. For 2022, the topic was the Psalm 23. This well-known Psalm draws a vivid analogy with our souls being sheep and our Lord God being our Shepherd.

For this VBS, it was suggested that a corded night lamp be produced by the event participants. After evaluating several design concepts, it was decided to produce a box shaped lamp with a removable lid. The inside of the lamp features a corded, candlestick. The cord is threaded through the back of the lamp box and includes an inline switch for turning the lamp off and on. The face of the box is a piece of glass to which a static cling graphic is applied. The graphic includes a leafy border, the outline of the Shepherd holding his staff, and the full text of Psalm 23. The lamp base protrudes from the front and sides of the lamp. A picket fence is attached to the base and surrounds the front and back. Two white sheep are made to stand inside the fence while a black sheep is glued to the outside of the fence.

In all, we acquired materials and supplies for making 25 kits. Parts included: instructions; a lamp base; a lamp lid; a decorative lifting handle; (2) lamp box sides, a glass paned lamp box front; a slide in thin back panel with a hole for threading the lamp cord; a static cling sheet to be applied to the glass window; (3) picket fence pieces; two stand up sheet; one sheep to be glued onto the fence exterior. VBS participants painted and assembled the various parts in the kit to produce the finished lamp.

The Psalm 23 VBS Craft represents the 5th year of participation by Birds in the Wood in this uplifting Adult VBS event.
